Here's a wee question I thought I would open up to the community and see what range of responses I got. We're a small company in the frozen (yes it is frozen here) north or the UK. On our LAN we have about 30-40 users (plus there's a few in remote workers).
Our current set up includes 3 Dlink DFE 2624 powered hubs (yes hubs...) spit over 2 patch panels.
2 are in the main office panel.
1 is in the server room panel.
The two panels are connected by a fibre link. This is a historical thing and we're unlikely to re-cable the office in the short term.
Obviously we are seeing some degradation of performance and, given the age of the hubs, I'd like them replaced. We have some dead ports on these. Plus we're probably going to add in an additional 10 users in the office. There's an office move on the horizon and I'd like to take good kit with me in a year's time.
I have a budget of £5k (5000 UK pounds) only.
Totting up the servers, desks, printers etc... 3*24 ports is 72 and should just cover us although a few more would be good.
Which switches would you opt for?
