Hello all,
I am going to be redoing my network at work and wanted to get some thoughts from others in how they have a large network setup, by either VLANS or subnetting. In my case I have multiple buildings where I am running out of 255 IP's so the standard 255.255.255.0 will not work and need to move to something else. I have done VLANS and subnetting in my past and both have their pro's and con's but wanted to get some other insight from others in the community. I am leaning towards VLANS as I would like to do the following:
Servers: 192.168.1.0
building 1: 192.168.2.0
building 2: 192.168.3.0
building 3: 192.168.4.0
With that said I would then allow all the buildings to talk to the 192.168.1.0 vlan but not allow the buildings to talk to one another directly. This would increase traffic throughput although I am a bit skeptical as myself and a few other IT people I work with would need to see all vlan's. My other concern is that my network has a mix of equipment. The router is a cisco device but the switches are either Cisco, 3com or HP so the tagging, untagging, vs Cisco's protocols are a bit different.
What are your thoughts about this? If I do not go the VLAN route the subnetting would work, but the traffic would pass all over the network making it very chatty to say the least.
Thank you in advance for the feedback!
