Can you back out to username prompt in ssh / putty session?

There are many times where I am connecting to a device and accidently type the wrong username (mostly I type my unix username). This happens a lot on like switches and routers where my physical username is non-existent.

I realize this when it's too late and I'm at the password: prompt. However there doesn't seem to be a way for me to back out and type in an alternate username. I can blow away the password but it never asks for the username (it usually just disconnects).

Is there a ctrl+ key sequence to "break out" and restart back at the username prompt, rather than duplicating the session and closing the old one?

This happens with Putty and SuperPutty.
