Class B subnetting Help

I need to subnet a new network a follows:

1 for PC's

1 for AP's

1 for barcode scan guns

1 for cameras

1 open

From my best knowledge I would want to do a class B

172.16.0.0

255.255.224.0

This will give me 8 subnets but over 8,000k hosts per subnet. Obvioulsy that's a lot of wasted IP's and broadcasts. Am I not calculating this properly?

Otherwise I can do VLAN's but it's a bit more work. This is a new network.

Also by setting up DHCP how can I determine how a PC gets a different IP than a barcode scanner? I know with Vlan's it's tagged.
