Stacking Dell Powerconnect 6224 switch issues

I picked up two refurbished Dell Powerconnect 6224 switches, two stacking modules, and a single stacking cable. Despite everything I tried, I cannot get them to see each other.

So far, I have:

- upgraded to newest firmware on both (v3.3.8.2)

- installed the stacking modules

- installed the cable between the two

- configured the stacking ports to be in "Stack" mode instead of "Ethernet" mode

- followed the Dell documentation to the letter as far as rebooting them so that master can be established

- switched the cable every which way

- reconfigured them by manually selecting a stack id of 1 on one switch and 2 on the other

- tried all of the above both with the switches configured with initial IP setup and without

- I even contact the company I bought the stacking modules and cable from to report I must have received a bad cable (as unlikely as that is) and they reproduced my problem on their end and assume is must be a config error

No matter what, the switches always see the stack link status as "Link Down" and they both consider themselves an isolated master.

Any ideas?
