Recently I had to run a pair of Ethernet cables to an office that didn't have any. It has a two port patch box on the end. Unfortunately, I also made the original cable length too short, so I also added a two port patch box in the center. They're connected at the other patch panel with a patch into an HP Procurve gigabit switch.
When I plug a cable into the end ports and plug my Fluke scanner in, it says the wire is good and gives me 10/100/1000 blinking on both ports with separate cables. Yay.
The Procurve does not have the solid light to indicate gigabit speeds at all ever, though the port number does blink to show activity.
The computer on the end with one cable plugged in says it has a gigabit Ethernet connection. The other cable to the other port says that it's only fast Ethernet.
So, the switch says they're always fast Ethernet.
The Fluke says they're both gigabit.
The computer says one's gigabit and the other one's not.
Who do I believe and how can I test for where the problem is in the cable, if there is one?
