In 2014 enterprise networking will change forever. Trends from 2013 -- cloud, BYOD, social media and big data -- will continue to push enterprises of all sizes and in all industries to fundamentally rethink what the phrase “business as usual” means. These days, there’s hardly any “usual” anymore.

For all of the promise these new technologies offer, they also bring plenty of chaos along with them. Often, this chaos is bad for incumbent businesses, but very good for the consumer (or in business terms, “end users”).

For instance, consumers have more ways to consume music than ever before, but in the process, the recording industry has been almost completely destroyed. Or in the business world, look at how Salesforce.com forced Oracle to modernize, prompting this partnership, which Larry Ellison never would have agreed to even a couple of years ago.

In 2014 consumers will again be winners, as will businesses that are open to change. Those businesses that resist change, on the other hand, will begin to fade away -- if they’re lucky. If they’re less fortunate, they’ll disappear overnight.
