Subnetting, VLANS or Both?

Our IT department is soon to say Hasta La Vista to a carrier-managed MPLS WAN network and we are ready to do some heavy lifting of our own. Looking for subnetting and other ideas from you Network Wizards out there. This is a BIG install. I plan on cutting over one office at a time. So, we will be running our current network in place during this transition. I'll give you as much details as I can to brainstorm about it below.

Current Configuration:

  • Individual windows Workgroups instead of a Windows Domain.
  • All network traffic routes through the MPLS and out to the web through a centralized hardware Firewall appliance.
  • Group policies are managed only at the individual client level on Windows 7 pro.
  • Our network consists of 25 offices but only 7 class-c LAN segments (192.168.1.x-192.168.7.x)
  • Each network segment has a T-1 connection for intertnet (I already know that is uncool, Ha!), a managed router/DHCP server and a 2600-series HP Procurve POE switch).
  • We have a centrally managed 200-phone (Shoretel 230 VOIP phones) network with a Shoretel router in place and Windows server-based management software for the config. Each phone also has a switch built in to connect a PC for internet access if wall ports are unavailable near the node.
  • Our network consists of 25 offices but only 7 LAN segments.
  • We have approximately 400 Windows PCs which require internet access collectively throughout the entire network.

The Goals:

  • A centrally-managed Wndows domain and DHCP server with AD, WINS and WSUS over a wireless WAN.
  • A larger Class B network on a 25-LAN subnet due to the number of offices or either V-LAN switching at each location.

Progress

  • We have 2 new high-speed fiber connections being currently installed at separate locations for redundancy.
  • All locations are now connected to a single location via point to multi-point Uniquiti Air Fiber dishes.
  • Each location now has a heavy-duty Microtik Router in place connecting via Wireless back to a core router at the headquarters PRI. 2600 POE HP Procurves will handle the switching.
