VLAN routing and default route

I'm currently in the process of implementing vlan's on our big-flat network and having some issues getting my head wrapped around the routing. I setup a test environment with a layer 3 core switch and a layer 2 switch to duplicate the production environment on a very small scale. I was able to successfully create vlan's and get traffic to route between them in the test side.

So...feeling confident I decided to try a small test on the production side. Again, I was able to setup a new vlan on the core L3 switch and add a L2 switch successfully (easy). However, I can't seem to get traffic to route correctly. I can only get traffic to route correctly if I set the default GW of clients to the corresponding vlan interface of the core L3 switch (which I believe is what I'm supposed to do anyway). However, now I can't get beyond the core L3 switch, i.e. The Internet.

I tried setting up a default gateway on the L3 switch to point to our Cisco ASA (default gateway), but still can't get there from here. Do we need to make changes on the ASA or did I mess up the config on the L3 switch, or is it something completely different?

Core L3 switch is a 3Com 5500G-EI and the L2 switch is an HP v1810-48G.
