I have a 20 Mbit downlink and 2 Mbit uplink for internet. I would like to do a task that will max out the upload rate of 2 Mbit, in this case allow our backup server to run it's backup to the cloud with no rate limit having full use of the 2 Mbit cap.
However, when I let it run with no rate limit the entire network experiences an internet slow down where our download speed drops to nearly half (around 10 Mbit) and our ping/latency goes from the normal range of between 25ms and 50ms to anywhere from 500ms to 1000ms ping. As soon as I put the rate limit back on everything is fine and we get our full download and good ping back.
Since we use a Barracuda Backup server for the cloud backup I contacted their support tech who states that this is normal and expected and that anytime you max out your upload it will affect the entire performance of the connection. However, he could not answer the WHY.
Can anyone here confirm this, and even better explain WHY allowing a service to max out your uplink in turn drastically affects download and ping response? The uplink is a low 2 Mbit, why would maxing this out cut a 20 Mbit downlink in half and destroy ping times? Appreciate any insight!
