Is it possible to use single mode or multimode fiber as a backbone cabling?

Use it to run from one MDF to IDF to IDF etc.... that could free up the spaces in the ceiling where thick cat cables would lay and would further troubleshoot nicely and secure communications. does anyone have a plan like that
