VPN and Routing

Afternoon folks :)

I'm having a problem with my VPN on client machines.

VPN, routing etc. isn't really a field I am that knowledgeable in so I would appreciate as dumbass answers as possible :P

We've got a VPN setup so that clients can connect to site and access network resources, however...They connect to the VPN, getting to internal resources works fine but when they want to connect to something that is on our parent companies network which is forwarded through another gateway on the network they can't, until we manually set the metric in advanced TCP/IP settings.

Unfortunately, because we push the VPN connections out via Group Policy, they metric setting is lost at startup and has to be set again, because it cannot be set in the Policy.

So my question is, when we change that metric value to '4999', what is that doing?Second, is there a better way I should be setting this so that the correct traffic is forwarded through to our parent company and the correct traffic stays on our network?

For reference, the network the client laptop sits on is usually 192.168.1, our network is 192.168.75 and the forwarded traffic to the parent company goes to 10.235.

Thanks in advance for the answers :)
