I’m looking for some recommendations on network monitoring tools. Im basically looking for a free lightweight utility to be able to zero in on network performance issues. The usual situation would be a customer suddenly claiming everything is slow, or perhaps an ancient old FoxPro program which keeps facing dbf corruption (probably due to a bad machine and/or nic). I know it isn’t always easy to zero in, but I would like to simplify the process as much as possible. I could either grab snmp info from the switch, or run the utility on the server in question, or perhaps both. Most importantly, I’d need to be able to see at a glance (at least) 24 hours of history. For example, total packets/bytes sent/received on each switch interface, or in the case of when running a utility on the server in question, be able to see history of total packets/bytes sent/received for all connections (not just real time as the case with netstat/tcpview data).
