I recently started a new job and I am trying to find ways to improve/better manage the existing network. Right now we have a mixed windows/linux enviroment, but no way to manage them all. They all do have administrator accounts, but they're unique to each workstation. I am comming from using windows SBS so I'm used to everything being on a domain and my domain login being able to give me access remotely to each machine. Is there software that can provide functionality like this with a mixed network? My boss is looking into ways that we can have the users choose/change their passwords, as of right now we're using LDAP for authentication and we assign each user a password. There is no domain or group policy, each new workstation is setup by me using master images, but a lot of the changes/programs I install could easily be deployed with a domain controller. Most of our servers are using open sourced software, and I was told Samba wouldn't be able to effectively control the domain...
Any ideas on how I can improve this setup?
