Wired routing from one switch to another = no network access

Due to an old building and other physical problems I'm trying to connect a workstation to our network using 5 port unmanaged switches. There is a direct cable from the server room to the first unmanaged switch. Everything plugged into this switch works fine. I needed to add a workstation so added another little 5 port switch plugged into the first switch. If I connect a workstation to this second switch I can't access the network. Both switches tested ok. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
