IP phones - OK, not really networking....

at the office we have a VOIP system and a VOIP server.

One of the users needs to work from home and wants to have their phone.

The phone vendor tells me that if I setup the IPphone with the IP of the office wan, it will , from behind the remote location router, connect to the office voip system and work (need to forward some ports).

I do not see how this could possibly work as the phone will be behind a router and not even on the local network. And even if it did somehow work, there would be an IP conflict. Plus that wan IP is owned by a totally different ISP than what the home user has.

Anyone have any insights on this??

Best I can think is that it would likely work if had a VPN setup. Think a simple PPTP VPN would be good for this?

This is an Altigen system and Altigen phones.
