Best, free netwirk monitoring tools

$

Hi All!

At my current company we have 6 total buildings, no DC, just site to site VPNs. We have been experiencing down time at some of our sites, whether its our link out or our main router having issues. Looking for a free software that would monitor basic network functions, such as simple ping test to external sites (nothing crazy, like 8.8.8.8) and maybe send alerts if there's packet loss. That would be the ideal situation. Any of you network ninjas out there have any recommendations? Thanks!

Any WISPs utilizing LTE?

We are a WISP in an area that is not very conducive to LOS deployments (tons of hills and trees). I wanted to see if there are any others utilizing LTE or similar technology to overcome these barriers for a NLOS option (other than satellite).

how to create a VLAN to access only internet

I have 3 HP switches

1) two Layer HP 3500 yl  layer 3 switch

2) one HP 2510 Switches

We are using default VLAN 1 only.  Now we have to create a new VLAN which will for accessing only internet. As I am new to this HP field, can any one help me in this.

Switch A (3500yl) connected to Firewall on switch port 12 (untagged)

Switch B (3500yl) connected to Switch A on switch port 24(fiber port) (untagged)

Switch C (2510) connected to switch B on switch port 10 ( untagged)

Presently we are using 192.168.1.X sub net in default VLAN,, Now we need to create 192.168.2.X to access only internet, there should not be any communication to 192.168.1.X subnet.

Expanding core switch vs adding edge switch?

I've got a reasonably humble core switch (HP Procruve 5406z) with 3 modules that are all maxed out. We recently added a computer lab and some additional connectivity into some classrooms (environment is a public school) and need some additional switch capacity for these locations which all cable back into the MDF.

Do I expand the core switch or add an edge switch to accommodate? I've got 3 module slots available in the core switch. But the modules are crazy expensive. We've implemented the ProCurve 2530-48-PoE series as edge switches elsewhere which seem to be just fine and are more reasonably priced (about 1/2 price of a core module) and it also provides twice the capacity (48 vs 24 port for a core module).

Any compelling reason to expand the core and keep that closet "simple" rather than adding in an edge switch and trunking it to the...

Fortigate Firewalls in HA - how to route WAN?

$

We are running 2 x Fortigate 100D in Active/Passive HA mode.

Recently I got the usual 'Is the internet down??' shout across the office, followed by the telephone calls and tirades from angry users. Small amount of digging later it transpired that the Master Fortigate had failed and the Slave had taken over. Staring dumbly at the two units it took me far longer to realise that there was nothing plugged into the Slave's WAN port. Quickly swapping the WAN lead from the Master unit solved the internet problem and everyone was happy. Except myself who felt stupid for not having seen this as an issue after the 'experts' who installed the units had left.

Fast forward to now and the faulty unit has been replaced, I have navigated the murky waters of re-registering the replacement and added it back to the HA cluster. Our main Leased Line comes in...

Hey Spiceheads,

Always a pleasure to reach out to the best community that the tech world has to offer. I wanted to see if you guys sell your company's excess/dated networking equipment to vendors who buy back said equipment? How does that process work?

Many thanks for your insight and may the spiciest answer win.

Network Route & VPN question

I am trying to create a network route to a branch office from another branch office.

Both branch offices are VPN'd to the Main office and I would like to connect from Branch A through the VPN to the Main Office to Branch B.

Presently I can connect from Branch A to the Main office and from Branch B to the main office just fine.

Basically I'm trying to avoid setting up a VPN from Branch A directly to Branch B. Can I create a network route to do this?

For example:

Branch A (192.168.11.0) ---- Main Office (192.168.1.0) --- Branch B (192.168.12.0)

and I'm trying to create a route that looks something like:

Route add 192.168.12.0 MASK 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.0

and I just get "The Parameter Is Incorrect" from the Route Add command in windows. Any thoughts or is this a dumb idea and I should just create another VPN?

The whole purpose of this is simply...

Re-cable data rack

So I've been contemplating the daunting task of re-cabling the disaster that is our data rack. I inherited this rack about a year ago and haven't really had the time or resources to tackle it. Well, I have decided to. I know this will not be easy or quick but I'm looking for suggestions. I have ordered velcro straps and colored cat5 bulk cable that I will crimp myself. I plan to test each cable and will re-make any that are not 100% but I'm pretty proficient at it. However, this is where I am looking for some tips, suggestions, etc. It is not possible for me to do this at a time when no one is here as even on weekends there is staff here doing work. So this will have to be done live and I plan to do it at a time where there's the least amount of staff on site.

Below are the horrific images of our data rack and thank you in advance!

Trouble Getting External IP

Good Morning Spiceheads!  I have a strange problem I can't seem to find the answer to so I'm turning to the Spiceworks community.  I am trying to help a lady setup remote access to her office.  I walked through setting up the basics on her end in terms of enabling remote access, setting up a user, etc.  So when I had her go to "What is my ip" in Google, she reads me back this number that looks like a MAC address 2602:306:cfc6:4df0:ad5f:2338:659d:9ae8.  So I had her go to myexternalip.com and it reports the same number.  Why is this not giving me her external IP?  Of course I tried using ipconfig, etc.  Any expertise would be greatly appreciated.

Routing different ssids to different vlans

Hi all,

I would like to set up the following

ssid y vlan tag 211 to pass dhcp requests to x.y.z.w

ssid x vlan tag 212 to pass dhcp requests to x.y.z.q

Currently  all the  wifi ssids connect on the management vlan 1

and get a dhcp address from the server x.y.z.q.

We use Netgear wnpa320 and Cisco switches

wih nps doing authentication against security groups in the Active directory

Would if be best to setup forwarders on the cisco switch to use the vlan tag to select the

correct dhcp packet frontwarder or on the windows 2008 r2 dhcp server to forward packets received on the x.y.z.q based on the vlan tag.

HP Switches STP question

I have HP Procurve 4108GL as a core and a root (10.0.0.1). A1 and A2 are connected to the HP2920 (10.0.0.37) on ports 43 and 44 accordingly.

Once a week, for no apparent reason, around same time 7-8 am network goes down. It keeps on going for about 20 minutes and then everything back to normal for about a week.

Any suggestions on why would switch stop getting BPDUs?

Here is the log from my syslog server:

Batch/PowerShell, Rasphone, Default Gateway automated script

We're in a bind for a temporary solution with our employees.

Using the builtin Windows 7 VPN client
Need a Full VPN Tunnel while out of the office (Default)
Need a Split VPN Tunnel while in the office

I wanted to use 1 rasphone.pbk and automatically change theIpPrioritizeRemote item to designate the desired gateway status.

I thought I could ping the Office Gateway, if a response was not received it would leaveIpPrioritizeRemote alone and use the tunnel (full).

If a ping to the Office Gateway responded, then theIpPrioritizeRemote item would be changed to a split tunnel and then established.

I have limited scripting experience, nothing this "complex".

Has anyone ever done something like this or parts of it?

Even partial assistance will be appreciated since I could piece together an entire script.

Thanks in advance!

From the switch not able to ping DMZ port on firewall.

On firewall, the DMZ2 port connects to ColoC3750X switch on Gi2/0/21 while the LAN port to Winston-3750sw switch Gi1/0/1, as shown on the diagram below and the config attached. There is a trunking connection between the two switches.

The big big issue is, from the ColoC3750X switch, we are NOT able to ping the DMZ2 port IP 10.10.2.1. (But from Winton-3750sw, we are able to ping both 10.10.2.1 and 10.10.2.2.)

Can you tell me what I missed out?
Appreciate any help.

QoS Setup

Hi Everyone,

So i'm prepared to be laughed at a little, but this kind of stuff usually isn't my department.

A client I am doing work for; I have the following situation:

  • pfsense firewall has static wan IP and one LAN (there are two more NICS available on the box to provision)
  • a Digium Switchvox 80 with SIP trunking from Digium.
  • A Netgear gs728tp switch (computers and phones are separate ports on switch, I did not want to plug computers into phones)
  • Windows Server 2012 Essentials box (running AD etc.)
  • pfsense is handing out IP addresses with the dns settings of the server.

My client is complaining that some of the phones are getting poor audio scratchy (symptoms of packets being lost?)

I am completely clueless on how to setup QoS I have never done it before, so I would really appreciate some knowledge for beginners.

Comparison Among EthernetCables

I'm doing the wiring works in my new house with cat 7 cable. Is it really better than cat6/5e? I am curious on  what category of cable should be used or if there is really anything better in speed handling? cat 5/5e, cat 6/6a or cat 7?

Configure Superscope, assign to vlan and new SSID

Hi,

In our network infrastructure we are running DC on Win2003 Server with DHCP server. Two VLANs (Default for data & 100 for VOICE) configured on two of HP Procurve 2610 switches.

I would like to configure a super scope in DHCP server to provide IP address from a different pool, then create additional VLAN on our HP Procurve 2610 switches, trunk the ports of these two switches to ensure the VLANs communication between the switches, after all configure Access point to provide the IP address from the newly configured super scope while ensuring there is no interconnection between the primary scope and super scope!

Please let me know how i can enable this, your earlier response will be highly appreciated.

Running CAT6 Ethernet Cables in my house – Need Help !!!

Hi all, need some advise around running Cat6 cables in my house. I am getting NBN FTTN soon, the phone port and the DSL modem will be in the study that are in the front of the house but I want to run Cat6 cables to my cinema room and living room that are in the back of the house....couple of questions:

- Do the cables need to be installed by a certified electrician?
- Will I need a hub in the study to patch the multiple cables to other rooms or is it better to use the free LAN ports from the DSL modem itself to provide connections.....I am guessing if I wanted to run more than 2 cables i will need a hub as DSL modem has only 2 free ports
