First off, let me apologize if this type of question has been explained ad-nausium elsewhere, but there is just so much information here to wade through, I failed miserably to find it, if it exists already. TL;DR at end.
I look after the network for a plastics manufacturer in an old 1900's 4 story cotton mill, who's IT department and servers/core switches (Extreme Summit 7i and 1i) are on the 3rd floor, with fibre links to 4th (40 or so white collar staff) and ground floor (manufacturing equipment and other staff), and we have 10 or so IP network cameras scattered around the building, which are recorded 24/7 to a NAS server on the 4th floor, the problem is the amount of network traffic they are generating, what with the recordings, and the security department building watching the camera's constantly is killing the network, and I've been asked to "fix it".
It's a simple 192.168.100.1 to 192.168.101.254 network, never had any involvement in VLANs or subnetting, so am looking for some pointers as to how to go about separating the camera traffic from the rest of the network, whilst still providing access to a couple of individuals in addition to the security department around the building.
Our equipment is a mish-mash of gigabit hardware, ranging from Extreme Networks 7i and 48 port managed (in name only) switches to noddy 8 port Cisco home kit, though I am trying to convince management that the answer begins with single vendor gear, so I'm trying to get them to buy me some Huawei S5710's with 10gb ports, but I risk the problem of the fibre not being compatible with the stuff we have in place.
TD;DR - Want to speed up network by getting IP network camera's scattered around building traffic off main 192.168.100.x subnet.
