First, thanks for all the help lately; joined spiceworks 3 months ago and finally am engaging a bit more...
So, I got hired 3 months ago as the only IT guy. No one here knows who ran all the network cables or labeled the jacks or hooked up the switches. Kinda weird...
Anyhow, I'd like to know what tools you use to "map" out the physical network? I've seen network maps and stuff regarding what switches connect to what servers or fiber or whatever, that's not really what I'm looking for. I want a physical map of what the jacks are under each person's desk, as well as where the cables go on both ends.
Like a blue-print of the building where I can notate "jack #5 and 6" under the desk where those jacks are.
Likewise, how do you diagram what cables are in the switch? None of the cables are labeled. I will label them but I'd like to have a pdf or something I can view on my computer that basically says:
3COM Switch:
x1=CEO
x2=Muzak system
x3=HR-Steve
x4=old boss PC, not powered on
x5=3622c Office Printer
...x16...
I'd like to know what each port has plugged into it. I don't have a cat5 sniffer device currently so I'm having to trace each wire manually.
Lastly: cable runs. Similar to my first question, how do you diagram the cable runs thru the wall and where they guy? On a blueprint of the building?
What software do you use to document this sort of stuff? Thanks! :)
