Hi All,
Someone may have answered this question before but I cannot find one.
We have a small LAN with all the cabling in cat5e. backbone cabling between switches is cat5e. The longest distance between switch1 in the main server room and switch2 in another office is 70 - 80 meters. Two more switches (switch3 and switch4) in two other departments are connected thru switch2. The last and the furthest switch (switch4) is connected thru switch3. All these switches are D-Link 10/100 switches and are very old, 5 years over.
Should I replace cat5e cables between each of these switches with cat6 cable as a backbone?
I plan to replace 10/100 switch1 and switch 2 with 10/100/1000 switches to start with and then upgrade all other remaining switches later. I will not replace cat5e cables to the workstations but any new cabling will be in cat6.
My overall aim is to improve the network performance. What are your thoughts. I need some advise from you how to handle this.
thanks in advance
Martin
