I am going to look around a potential new office tomorrow and want to do a quick test of the network wiring. I am told there is a patch panel in place with 108 network ports around the office. I probably don't need to test all 108 but i want to test a few just to check that they A) work and that B) the patch panel is labelled up correctly and match the port numbers around the office.
I was thniknig of just plugging in a small router at the patch panel end and then plugging in my netbook in the ports and watching the lights but i wouldnt be surprised if there is an easier way of doing this? In my last job we had a small device like thing that you plugged into an ethernet port and pressed a button and told you whether it was live but i cant remember for the life of me what it was called. Anyone?
