I am a new admin in a legacy network experiencing a problem with our Exchange server.
The exchange server is Exchange 2010 on a Win 2008 server box. We have a primary domain controller with all of the FSMO roles which runs on a Win 2003 server box. We also have two secondary domain controllers in the physical network that are each on a Win 2008 Server. One of the SDC's is virtualized the other is on a physical box.
DHCP is not on the servers, it is handled by our SonicWall firewall which I do not believe integrates with active directory. DNS points to the PDC as the first DNS entry and the physical SDC for secondary DNS.
We also have GFI Mail Essentials that filters any incoming mail. This service lives in the cloud.
The other day, our primary domain controller on the Win 2003 server box started to crash.
At that point, none of the clients could attach to Exchange using their Outlook app and one of the computers in the network lost authentication and could not log in. In some instances, sending outgoing worked for the clients still connected to Exchange but all incoming mail was stopped.
It is my impression that one of the secondary domain controllers should take over for the primary when it is down.
I would be VERY appreciative if someone could point me in the right direction...
Thank you :)
