Hi. I've worked as a low-level IT guy for about 3 years total - but I have never had to set up SNMP on anything. In fact, before last week I had never even heard of SNMP. So the following ramble/question will basically outline my despair in all things SNMP.
Now I am being tasked with setting up SNMPv3 for all of our printers on our small-business network (about 8, so not a crazy task). I've got a basic understanding of SNMP from YouTube and from this online Essential SNMP manual, but I have no idea where to start, and I don't know what I need.
Some resources mention the need for something that basically sounds like SNMP server software - for creating users and groups, passwords, and outlining the authentication/protection levels. But I haven't found anything online to suggest whether this is accurate or not. The Essential SNMP manual discusses the use of a Network Management Station (NMS), but from its description it basically sounds like what we use Spiceworks for. But inside Spiceworks the only thing I've been able to find is Settings > Network Scan, and creating an SNMPv3 stored password. But I have no idea how to line all this up with our printers. And I have no idea if that is even the place to start.
Can anyone out there point me in the right direction? Maybe in bullet-points that a 5-year-old could understand? Thanks : )
