Strange Windows XP networking issue - "remote procedure call failed"

One of our clients has had a SSL VPN working between 3 XP pro machines for several years. One is acting as server for the other two (remote locations) for their accounting system. The simply need file sharing to read/write to specific shared directories.

It is Astaro SSL VPN

According to them, nothing as changed in the past few days - but windows networking communication with one of the two machines has begun acting crazy. The VPN appears to be working fine. This is some sort of weird XP permissions or cache thing.

- I can ping both ways between the XP machines.
- Firewalls disabled
- Existing shared paths still work (from net hood), but not direct access to \\name or \\ip
> I am not even prompted for credentials, just churns and churns, eventually gives error:
"not accessible... you do not have permissions.... remote procedure call failed"
- This kind of behavior occurs in both directions (old paths work, new ones fail)
- I have renamed the machine, changed workgroups, add a new user with no change
- The problem "seems" to be tied to the one remote XP machine, as the other still works
- For good measure, I removed and re-installed the VPN client. But I think it is working OK.

Has anyone see this type of behavior before?
