How can I have openvpn client on the same subnet as Openvpn server?

Note: I'm a person with accounting and taxation background. Everything I know about computers or network, I have learnt myself using various sources out of my own interest. Let me describe the network a little. There is a Synology NAS at my office which consists of all the data. Some shared folders are created with different access rights for different users and shared over the network. All the computers on LAN will be able to access the shared folders through Windows file explorer. I learnt about Openvpn and installed vpn server on the NAS(192.168.5.111). Changed the subnet of office network to 192.168.5.0. Openvpn subnet is 10.8.0.0. Now Openvpn client is installed on staff computers and they are able to access the shared folders in windows file explorer remotely as if they are on the office LAN. The problem: We use an accounting...

upgrade server

I was wondering if you guys can help answer me a question or 2.  I have a windows 2003 server for FS and I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade to 2012r2 with out losing data.  I would like to try and just install 2012 over 2003 and have a 2012 server instead of 2003.  Also I have 3 DC that are 2008 and I would like to upgrade them to 2016 with out losing anything at all.

Do you think that is possible and if so can someone give me the instructions on how to do it.

Thanks for the help

How do I determine which transceivers to purchase?

I'm replacing our current firewall and looking at two different firewall options being either the Sonicwall NSA 3650 or the Fortigate FG-100F.

This new firewall will connect to 2 core 10G Fiberstore S5800-8TF12S switches using sfp+ ports

Trying to determine which transceivers are needed. Both of the firewall vendors are telling me I have to use their transceivers for compatibility. But my switch vendor is telling me their transceivers will work just fine.

Pricing on these transceivers from each of the vendors vary's greatly

  • Sonicwall - $1245 per module
  • Fortigate - $100 per module
  • Fiberstore - $18 per module

Should I,

A. Go with the firewall vendor on both sides of the SFP+ connection (all 4 transceivers from firewall vendor)

B. Go with the switch vendor on both sides of the SFP+ connection (all 4 transceivers from switch vendor)

To switch or not to switch (switches)?

We currently have Ubiquiti UniFi switches for aggregation (US-16-XG) and access (US-48) that have been in service since 2017. There have been no problems and their performance has been excellent for our sub-50 user (~100 total devices including wireless) network. The only semi-advanced features we are using are LAG and RSTP.

We recently built a new server room and also annexed the building next door. I'm in the process of putting in all new network drops in both buildings, networking the two buildings together, and doing more or less a complete overhaul of the network. At the very least I need one more US-16-XG and a USW-PRO-24 to get the new server room and new building connected into the existing network until the transition is complete. However, I've been wondering if this might not be a good time to upgrade to more "enterprise...

Web server best practices

Hello all,

I want to make sure that my thought process is on the right path.

We are having to create a web server for our company software. The software that will be used outside of the network is a time sheet portion, job and lead creation for sales and other things.

I am currently working on setting up a DMZ, basically a separate network on a separate port of my firewall. I am looking at setting up both a web server, as well as a proxy server. I was thinking of having the proxy server sitting in the DMZ with the web server on my LAN that the SQL database server is on with the software information.

  1. Is a proxy server a good way to go in this application or is a proxy server not necessary in what I am trying to accomplish?
  2. What ports/resources would I need to be opening/allowing for this to work?

DNS Suffix suddenly appending with .home for VPN users.

Hello,

I have a few users who can't ping or RDP into their work computers from home. I thought maybe something was wrong with the VPN but when I went to my house and tried, I quickly figured out that DNS wasn't resolving for anything in the network, even though it was checking our domain DNS server. I noticed that it was appending all of the DNS request with ".home". I had one of the affected users check and they reported the same thing.

I didn't change anything, and I suspect that neither did the other users who are experiencing this.

I know I can just use the FQDN of the machine and it works.

I made sure the VPN DHCP has the correct domain suffix, but it doesn't seem to affect it.

So, is anyone else seeing this? Is there something in my DNS config I should check? Is there a windows update that might have caused this?

packet loss

Hello guys

a game called CALL OF DUTY WARZONE have packet loss issue for my country .

i wanted to fix this issue with my isp . but we dont know what cause of this packet loss

i even tried VPN for example when i use PPTP or L2TP packet loss still there . but when i use a TCP base VPN like SSTP or OPENVPN TCP

packet loss get fix from start.

my question is what should i do . when i ping the server it not respond to ICMP but i can ping a pingable ip from same prefix that game use . its ping is stable and low latancy. game use UDP protocol

Setting up a seperate network on a seperate NIC team.

Ok here is my set-up and what I want to do.

I have a hpe proliant DL380 G8 running windows server 16. I want this machine to be a virtual host for VMs using Hyper-V. My goal is to have the host running on the main LAN while my VMs run on a seperate network to keep them isolated from my private network.

I have two NIC teams set-up. One (port 1&2) is plugged into one switch connected to the firewall using the main PVT network. 10.219.116.1

Nic-Team 2 (port 3&4) is plugged into a different switch that is plugged into the sideband network of the firewall 10.144.111.1. I know this switch has internet access as I have another machine plugged into it I use for ILO management.

So I created an external virtual switch pointing to NIC-Team2 but cannot get any access. I tried setting a static address using 10.144.111.1 as the gateway and I get the...

Extending a VPN to a suitcase

I hope that title got your attention.

I have a suitcase with a special function type appliance inside used for industrial control that communicates over Ethernet. Typically, to use this device, you need to connect it to a database server and GUI client that runs on Windows. I want to reduce the weight of the suitcase as much as possible, so I would either need a really small windows computer (which they make), or to network some virtual windows computers I have in a colocated space to my suitcase. The appliance does not have any ability to install or manage a VPN connection to the colocated computers. Furthermore, I still need a UI inside my suitcase (in which I want to install a flat monitor), but I could easily use a Raspberry PI or something small like that to connect to the VPN, then RDP to the Windows computer, but the Windows...

Can you access one internal network via another

Hi,

I have probably a very easy question about network configuration. Imagine there is a network configured like this:

INTERNET -->  FIREWALL --> SWITCH --> (AND TWO NETWORKS ON IT) --> 10.20.188.0/24 and  192.168.0.0/24.

My question is can I reach from one internal network device that is on another. Example my desktop is 10.20.188.22 and there is an IP camera on 192.168.0.22 so can I connect to it?

Public wifi installation - Ubiquiti

I am venturing out in business on my own, and a friend who owns a local hotel has asked for my help in installing public wifi in the premises.

As I am familiar with Ubiquiti, I suggested that would be a good starting point, particularly as his budget is rather low...

However, I'm realising that I am not as familiar with it as I thought...

There is one server on site, Windows Server 2016, which has two VM's running on the host. The VM's are for DNS/DHCP and the other is a file server. It is a single LAN, there is no VLAN. One router, no switches.

What we ideally need to achieve, is to separate the public wifi SSID off of the hotel's LAN so that guests signing in are assigned an IP in a different subnet. There is only one router/WAN connection.

At this point, I'm stuck.

There will be approximately 8 AP's.

Ideally, we need to guests to sign into...

Connecting layer 3 switches and router

Just want to clear some confusion up, and I know this is probably a newb question.. I have two buildings on the same site and using Layer 3 switches in each building which are connected to layer 2 switches. The layer 3 switches in each building will connect to one another and these will then link to the Internal router in the main building. (See config below).

We have decided to use RIP. So, my question is, does RIP need to be configured on each layer 3 switch since they are connected together AND on the internal router. OR does RIP only need to be configured on the Internal router?

VPN- Macfiltering

Hi all,

We use Sophos UTM for our VPN. Is there any way i can implement macfilering to block unauthorized mac address to allow into the network.

Note: this should be implemented only those who are connected through the VPN

Thanks

Attempting a File..Save through mapped drives via VPN immediately disconnects

I am running Server 2016 and SonicWall SSLVPN. My users are all Windows 10. All users are able to open files from mapped drives, interact with them, then save and close the files...except ONE user. When he makes a change and clicks Save, the VPN will disconnect after about 15 seconds and the file cannot save. Reconnecting immediately still does not allow saving the file.

We see an error in the NetExtender log that states: The connection was idle longer than the configured idle timeout.

What am I missing?

Network Problem Resolved Itself After Wireshark Install

Hello all,

I have a bit of an odd scenario.

We have been having network issues with one of our applications here downloading files from a server. It affects about half the PC's.

In order to troubleshoot this problem I was going to try using Wireshark to look at the traffic. I noticed the problem went away soon as Wireshark was installed and came back soon as it was uninstalled.

I'm thinking this may be more related to Npcap that gets installed with it.

Does anyone know what it is changing during install that may be causing these issues to go away?

It would be nice to know what it is changing that is essentially "fixing" the issues without actually having to install either one.

Thanks,

Justin

Peer to Peer network stop Covid-19

how can you help the authorities to minimize or stop spreading of CORONA virus among people using the concept of peer to peer networks?

How to quickly test that an RJ45 is still active and connected to the switch..

I work in a large old factory that is always moving equipment around. Whats the best way to quickly find out if an RJ45 socket is still active and connected to the switch...without first tracing it at the switch.

Lots of old used and unused sockets around the factory...with the multiple switch cabinets dotted around the factory...

I have my data cabling licence but don’t do very much data work.

Our SSL Forticlient VPN doesn't start automatically

Hello,

For at least 6 months now we are facing the issue that for some of our stores, the Forticlient SSL VPN does not start automatically after the reboot.

We are using Forticlient version 6.0, and it works fine in 90% of the cases. Just the 10% we are unable to resolve.

The stores themselves aren't able to access the Forticlient, so this presents an issue for us.

Did someone face this issue before? And were you able to resolve it?

If not, is there a good place to start troubleshooting? The Forticlient logs don't really show anything at all, not even an attempt to start the connection.

Cisco QoS shape average percent 100

Help! I am trying to understand the impact of this configuration. Will the shaping shape traffic for the class-default class to 100% of the class' 48% of the interface bandwidth during congestion? I don't understand why the 100%?
