Remove Cisco ISR leased from ISP ?

Hello all,

Can I replace the Cisco router my ISP installed for fiber internet with something simple and inexpensive? A sizable part of the bill goes to fees for managing it, but not sure about its function. Seems to act like a high priced cable modem in bridged mode. Current set up:

Fiber > Ciena switch > cat6 > Cisco ISR4331 > switch > multiple devices with public static IPs: 2 utm|firewall|routers and 1 basic nat router.

The Cisco takes one address from the /29 and the routers currently use that address as the default gateway. Service is 100mbps up and down.

I suppose lack of out of band management for ISP support would be a downside but luckily have not needed it yet in almost two years.

Anyone tried anything similar? Thanks

Subnets lose network connectivity for 20min. intermittently

We are losing connectivity to network devices within an entire subnet across our network sporadically for 20min at a time. The issue didn't start occurring until the day after we switched our ISP. Primary and secondary DNS servers are set as DC1 and DC2 respectively. I recently added a third DC as apart of a recent upgrade to O365 with Windows 10 (this and another 2019 server will be replacing the old DC's). The new DC is not set as the primary or secondary DNS server by GPO just yet but it appears clients are connecting to is as a DNS server when running . As far as I'm aware outages have happened 4 times since July 9th and appears to effect different subnets each time. Could this be related to DNS in some way?

I'm the only network/systems staff member in a company of 160+ with an all, on-premise infrastructure and we don't have a...

How to set up Sonicwall Failover

$

I'm wondering if I have a misunderstanding about how failover works and maybe I had set this up wrong. I'll admit, I'm a bit of a rookie, but trying to work these things out.

I have a primary WAN on X2 and two backup WANs on X4, and X1.

I had a service interruption on X1 (backup) and my network starting having intermittent connection issues. I was told that X1 modem had a red light on it so I instructed the person on-site to pull the plug on it and everything came back online.

I had prioritized my primary connection, so I'm not sure why the backup mattered in that case. I'm also wondering how the Sonicwall determines if a link has an actual connection to the internet and not just an uplink to a downed device.

Even some keywords to help me sort it out would help. Thanks a bunch!

Understanding server failover

How do you address server failover on a limited budget, given that there are many different ways to go about it. Making backups is a good start, but if the physical server failed how do you address this?

For example if you had a DC - would you have a cold spare DC or would you have a spare DC active?
If you have 2 DC's, do you put them on separate switches, or put them on the same switch - if the switch fails then you simply replace it with one off the shelf? I'm slightly confused how having two DC's on the same switch would work, how do you point it to the secondary DC?

Management Network Best Practices

Hi,

I'm working on building out a better management network at my current company but I feel a little lost because I haven't really found a best practice for this quite yet. I've seen people recommend creating an out of band management network while others just recommend a VLAN with ACLs that prevent non net-admin users to be accessing it.
I've only got about 30 routers(25 are remote), 3 firewalls, a few virtual firewalls, 3 core switches, and an SSLVPN appliance, so as we've ramped up our SNMP monitoring we haven't been affecting our bandwidth too much even though a lot of traffic is coming in via IPSec tunnels.
Should I just try to start routing all of our traffic over a mgmt vlan or should I be trying to create an entirely separate management and mgmt vlan to separate traffic?
Sorry if this is very novice, but this is something that...

Unexplainable network issue

My network is having an issue that no one can explain. Exactly 2 computers can find the DHCP server. Those computers are working fine. The rest cannot find the DHCP server. If I statically assign an address to them they still cannot find other machines on the same subnet with statically addressed ip addresses assigned to them even though they are up because the 2 machines that are working can find them fine. I don't even know where to look next. HALP!!!

check that a computer is up and log it - tweaking a previous topic?

I have a computer we don't use much that locks up once in a while - 1x a week? - can't connect to it remotely and when we turn on the TV its connected to, it's blank. We hold the power button to shut it down then turn it back on. Nothing in the event log.

Curious to see when it shut down / try to find a pattern to see when it loses connectivity.

I found this page:

https://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/154193-ping-with-timestamp-and-log

and the command

Ping.exe -n 1 basement | ForEach-Object {"{0} - {1}" -f (Get-Date),$_} | Tee-Object "D:\Check basement.txt" -Append

But that logs 6 lines of info for each ping. Anyone know of a way to get 1 line of info with a time stamp showing ping was successful / failed? Or some other simple way other than ping?

I envision setting up task manager to run this once an hour. Next time I manually see the...

network performance issue

For several weeks or a month we've been experiencing network performance issues. We use all Windows 10 clients and Server 2016 servers. The servers are VMs running on ESXi 6.7. The clients are connected to a Dell N2048 switch via 1 Gbps links. Our servers are connected to a Dell N4032 switch via 10 Gbps links. There is a 10 Gbps fiber link between the 2 switches.

The most visual representation of the issue is when copying a large file to the server. The Windows file copy status will keep bouncing between 0 bytes/s and anywhere from 50-100 MB/s. I can have a constant ping going between the client and server while the copy is going and never lose a single packet.

Any ideas what to look at?

Has anyone ever seen this before? Look closely at the cables. It is all throughout the cat5 cable.

Never seen this modem

Recently inherited an office in another state. The modem was old and not leased from the internet provider. So I had one installed by the provider along with getting a static IP for the service. But when I set my router to use the static IP there is no internet. Set it back to DHCP and all works.

So I asked the provider to be sure their modem is set as bridge/pass through. I got silence... then they told me we had to make those changes. When I access the modem I can only see information and status, not settings edit.

The modem is one I have never seen. Hitron CODA-47

I downloaded the user manual and there is nothing in it for changing settings or bridge mode. Have any of you used one of these modems? More importantly know how to get it into bridge mode.

Windows 2004 update and sme server connectivity issue

Hi all,

So at a client we run an sme file server and they all use windows 10. We upgraded them to the 2004 update on windows 10 but this created quite an issue. We have been trying to solve it but have been unsuccessful so far.

The main issue is that everyday when users turn on their PCs and try to connect to the file server which is mapped as network drives it says that the device name is already in use and it fails to connect.

The fix that we found is a temporary one but works for the time being. To fix the issue we have to disconnect all of the network drives and then remove any saved credentials from that server. We then have to remap the network drives and enter the credentials again. We do this daily so that the clients can access the server but it is an everyday struggle.

We have uninstalled the feature update to 2004 on a few PCs...

Connect two Buildings

For two buildings within 100 meters of another, would you use layer 3 switches in both buildings and link them together via fiber, then in the main building have an extra layer 3 switch which connects to the firewall and then both layer 3 switches in the buildings connect to this switch for added redundancy?

Converting copper to fiber

If a router has only RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet ports, but a switch has  Ethernet 10GBase-T copper ports and  10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ ports, could the copper cable from the router be converted to fiber to connect the switch via fiber?

With backup wireless connection, can PCs reach a database on wired network?

Hi all!

We're going to new postal shipping software next year. Our current solution has a local server option, so we can still ship if we lose our internet connection. The new solution will require an internet connection for address verification for every label printed. Our wired internet is pretty reliable, but if it went down for some reason we'd be dead in the water. One solution we're considering is a wireless backup connection (cellular hotspot and wireless adapters for the shipping desktops) just for the shipping computers.

Here's my question: If we had to connect to wireless internet, would our computers still be able to reach out across our wired local network to get to our database servers the order information is stored on?

If you need more information, please let me know. Thanks, and stay safe!

Hi All

I am currently re-evaluating our NPS wireless setup and considering centralising the NPS role and adding wired switch port authentication as well but before I do that I am looking at our current config.

We have:

  • Unifi APs @ at each office all controller via a controller
  • Fortigate @ each office with site to site VPN connectivity
  • NPS servers at all offices
  • MDM for our Apple iDevices (Jamf)

The Unifis have 3 SSIDs:

Mobiles:

  • WPAEnterprise using NPS server.
  • Network Policy conditions are Windows (user) Group “Mobile Users” and Called station ID “Mobiles”.
  • A GoDaddy cert is used in the EAP settings and matches NPS server name

Computers:

  • WPA Enterprise using NPS
  • Network Policy conditions are Windows (computer) Group “company computers” and Called station ID “computers”.
  • A GoDaddy cert is used in the EAP settings and matches NPS...

Hello,

We keep getting these SNMP alerts from the APC NMC. I've already configured the NMC  to allow spiceworks to scan it (they still keep happening). We are still getting these alerts from different IP address's every time and we cant ping them ( we ping them but we get a "Destination host unreachable" on them.)

We would appreciate any support

Thanks!
