Web site/network monitoring from multiple Internet points

Yesterday we had access problems from some of our customers because of a cable cut to one of the carriers that supplies my main ISP, as we weren't notified. :-(

I am looking for suggested services that can monitor my network from various parts of the United States to let me know if our web site is having availability issues. I would be happy with some combination of ping and loads of our web site. I know that back in the day there were several companies charging a lot of $$ to monitor how fast your site was loading and even to do synthetic transactions. I am more interested in knowing how the network is than my web server specifically. Ability to access through wireless carriers is a plus since we have employees that need to be able to access our data center from their phones and tablets. We block IPs outside of the US, so I don't care...

Switching change oddity

I'm going to pose this question to the community before I hit up TAC:

We have a Cisco phone system virtualized on Cisco UCS pizzabox servers. They were set up by a vendor, and I get to maintain them.

We recently purchased new switching, and I've been slowly documenting and moving ports. Today it was time for the phone system. So during a quiet period, I verified my config, moved the ports and voila .... odd things started happening. Call center couldn't log into the queue, and voicemail wasn't responding. Phones general operation is fine.

My question is this: since I have the "same" config on the ports, and just moved them over, is there something on the switch level I'm missing??

Setup:

3560 connected via crossover cable into 2960 stack.

Ports on 3560 configured for vlan 4, trunk dot1q

Ports on 2960X - vlan 4, trunk mode (does not appear...

How to go about having a third party evaluate our network and internet connectio

For almost a year now we've been working with ADP and their "service edge" program. They have blamed out network, our internet connection, our firewall, etc... for the speed issues between our PC's and their system. Despite some members of their own support staff stating that our network and connection were not the issue. The software itself is pretty terrible. Constantly locking up, constantly having script errors, and generally it's pretty slow most of the time. We were lied to upfront about the requirements (initially 2Gb was fine... now they stay 8Gb to 16Gb minimum.) Despite all this, management is staying the course with this horrendous wreck of a software application.

They've asked me to find a local company to ask as a 3rd party to come in and evalutate our systems. They want them find and repair anything that they find....

Why is DHCP being bad?

So here's the story.

I recently changed service providers now the internet in the building is coming from a static IP into the server with a DHCP server installed. (Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials) The problem that I am having as that as soon as we switched the server stopped assigning addresses. I have no idea why. I had to assign static IP's to our IP phones because they weren't pickup up DHCP options. Please help me before I crawl up under my desk and just hide.

Internet Privileges for groups of users.

Today I got a new task from my boss to research into limiting Internet at our company to only certain sites or services. Here is my problem. At first I thought I'll perhaps look into a group policy setting where I allow internal network availability to some users but block off Internet altogether, but then I realized that our Exchange server is Online in the cloud through Office 365, and that would also disable the connection to the Cloud. I'm not an expert on Group Policies, maybe it is possible to disable Internet through the browser but keep it enabled for Email? Perhaps I have to create groups and exceptions on my Gateway/Firewall/Router? I looked into Dell's Sonicwall, which we have currently at one building and the Netgear Prosafe FVS338, but both have different configurations, and while one is better than the other in some...

Wireless stability monitoring tools

Does anyone know of a device or possibly an iPad app that we could use as a canary to monitor wifi stability? I've been thinking of just putting some mac minis or raspberry pis or something around the office with a script that pings out of both the wifi and wired port and logs significant differences in uptime, but thought I'd try to crowdsource an easier solution first.

I have PC1 on vlan 1, PC2 on vlan 2, PC3 vlan 3, and all these pcs are connected to switch and I want to connect DHCP server on switch so that all the pc will get the ip address.

My question is the port to which i connect DHCP server should be trunk port and if  it is access port than what vlan should i tag on that port?

Obvsouly here vlan 1 is native vlan.

Using WDS over different IP stacks

Hello all,

I am currently trying to use Windows Deployment services to image machines in an office located in a different state. The IPs at our main office are xxx.xxx.0.x while the IPs of the machines in the other office are xxx.xxx.30.x. They all share the same network and DHCP server. Any ideas how to get the WDS server to notice calls from a 30.x address?

EdgeMax Router - Segregate GUEST and LAN interfaces

I am working on creating a Guest LAN for our public wifi.

So far I have set up a dedicated interface on our router that will handle the Guest traffic/firewall.

I know I am missing something simple, but I can't seem to block traffic between the two interfaces, but leaving Guest access to the WAN.

I have created a ruleset "GUEST_LAN" and added a rule to drop traffic from our LAN subnet...but its not working.

What rules do I need in place to make this work?

Text
@EdgeMAX# show firewall all-ping enable broadcast-ping disable ipv6-receive-redirects disable ipv6-src-route disable ip-src-route disable log-martians enable name GUEST_LAN { default-action accept description "" enable-default-log rule 1 { action reject log disable protocol all source { address 192.168.1.0/24 } } } name WAN_IN { default-action drop description "WAN to LAN" rule 1 {...

What harware would be required for Layer 7 firewalling

Hey Spiceworks,

I'm doing a project for a healthcare instititute in the netherlands at the moment, one of the coverd topics are illegal downloads. The institute houses kids 6 - 22 years old whom can't live at their parents house for whatever reason.

Anyways, a lot of those kids are gamers, downloads, etc. And they've been smart enough to give those kids their own internet connection.

Now the culprit is: I've been requested to block illegal downloading by the torrent protocol, without making it impossible for those kids to play their games. After doing a little research I discovered steam was using the torrent protocol for their downloads. So I thought about handling this on layer 7.

Which raises the question: What kind of hardware would one need to do DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) on an 500Mbit/s fiber connection.

At the moment we've got an...

Mitel Phones randomly state Option 128 missing

$

I think I have a network issue. Specifically DHCP. I have a Mitel 3300 system. It was installed a few weeks ago. During the install all my phones booted as expected and downloaded firmware. I configured DHCP prior to the installation and initial setup worked with all DHCP options. I have not changed my DHCP server.

99% of the time the phone work when moved. The other 1% the phones will state option 128 is missing. I have searched the web and tried several suggestions but haven't found a great solution just yet. I have option 128 configured in my primary VLAN (untagged VLAN1) and option 128 configured for VLAN2. If I reboot the phones 3 or more times they will boot. Any new phone I plug in will always boot and download firmware so I can enter the PIN.

My DHCP server is Windows Server 2008R2 in VLAN1. Phones are in VLAN 2. Any ideas why...

Hi all

I looking at changing my DDNS provider, I went with one of those freebies and they have left me high and dry and my personal Exchange server dead in the water . I have 11 domains, a few I use for Exchange, file servers and custom web apps.

I was curious what the SpiceWorks community thoughts on some of these providers

Routers I am currently using are dd-wrt and SonicWalls

Thanks in advance

Quite worried about hotel network & security

Hello there,

I am quite a network noob and realise that this job should be given to someone else as this is a big task but we do not have the money to be paying consultants/network engineers.

Basically, my Dad owns a hotel/restaurant & also lives on site. Each 'suite' is located on it's own in a courtyard so they are not all close together.

Basically, we are providing free WiFi to guests, running an IP surveillance system, running VoIP phones, running a property management system on a server in the office (with POS software installed on 2 computers) & other general back office computers all on the same network. Unsecured... Nightmare, I know. The only thing that is making me feel not as bad is that the property management system (Windows software) and the point of sale systems are all running on a Windows Server 2012 domain... however...

Automatic network testing

I found an app called Simon Monitor, to periodically hit DNS/Web/Ping on my test network (and google) to make sure nothing has crashed inside or out.

In poking around, I found that Simon doesn't do traceroute... and that would help identify if my ISP is having some issues upstream. (Charter outage a few days ago) Right now, according to Simon, I have an average of 8% packet loss throughout a day's worth of communication.

So, what are some suggestions out there for an app that has statistics/reporting for traceroutes?

In some manual traces, I'm finding that data is bouncing all around the nearby states before going to it's destination and it's starting to get annoying when not using a TCP connection.

"Password is incorrect" With Network Cable In

$

Weird issue we've seen recently with one user on Windows Vista in a domain environment running Windows Server 2012. Just recently their Windows login password wasn't being accepted. Simple enough fix I thought, reset password on AD and job sorted. However, this hasn't worked. We have tried multiple times with no luck.

Bizarrely, if we unplug the network cable to force it to use cached credentials, it works fine. If we plug the cable back in and then manually change the password from the client's machine and lock it - we get the same problem as before. We have tried multiple passwords and ensured the account is not locked out. If you try to log in to other accounts which don't have profiles on the machine, we get the same "Password is incorrect" error. All network drives and internet connectivity are working fine.

Any ideas to what this...
