I'm working on a few projects that specify a few different SFP modules. The spec states to only use Cisco switches with Cisco GBICs. They recommend SX, LX and Copper. I can understand using SX between closets and LX from another building. I don't understand why I would ever use copper as an SFP.
I can also understand and agree with wanting to start an infrastructure with Cisco Switches. However, I'm not sure if the SFP must also be Cisco. I'm sure the next question will sound naive, but is a GBIC a GBIC? Or is there a huge difference that justifies the cost?
Any suggestion and recommendations are appreciated.
