1 company 2 IT guys = 1 forest or 2?

I am going to keep this short and sweet I don't want to go into to much detail but if more is required then I will.

The company that I work for is going to change out a server that currently has one forest for 3 locations.

the question is would it be best to have each IT department have their own forest within the DC?

in the near future we will be deploying a 4th site. (2 sites per IT admin)

Network Policy Server is killin' me

Me and my co-worker are new to the IT industry(less than 1 year) and basically have had our entire companies network thrown in our lap to manage. We are currently trying to migrate away from the Microsoft TMG and transfer everything for our Fortigate to manage instead. Today has been a huge headache and if someone could help that would be awesome.

We currently have a RADIUS Authentication/Network Policy Server that is doing all authentication requests for our Secure Wireless. It works correctly verifying the requests against the active directory.I'm now trying to setup the same pass-throughauthentication through our Fortigate Firewall for VPN users to authenticateagainst.

The requests are being forwarded from the public internetthrough the firewall to the RADIUS server (I am assuming all the headers aremaking it through without being...

Networking for iSCSI

Ok guys, here we go

I've made a few mistakes in this configuration, and I'm aware of that, so I'm now looking for a little assistance in fixing as much as I can.

I started here a little over 3 months ago, I found out the previous admin, ran out of storage on his arrays, so had migrated some shares to USB drives and was sharing from that... Wow, so I ordered a NAS and moved all the file shares to it (OBR10)

2 weeks after that, a HDD failed in the ONLY server. Ok, not a big deal, get a replacement, rebuild, and continue on (R1 for OS, R5 for what had been data, not my setup) except the array failed during rebuild... And nobody had tested the backups since they had been configured a few years prior... Oh 5H17!

Anyways, end up bringing in some of my own hardware, setup a virtual server, and started rebuilding... Using only the knowledge I had...

Is It possible to allow one fqdn to resolve to two different subnets on a network? This is a request I have for an enterprise, the users are not very "computer literate"

Open to any and all suggestions

Bandwidth Control / reporting router?

One of the networks I'm manageing has grown significantly in the past 18 months. From 35 workstations to over 200.  I've had to extend from 24 bit to 16 bit subnet.  I am exceeding the abilities of the router that's handling the internet.

I would like to purchase a router that has the ability to throttle users, report bandwidth by IP address, user name (if integrated into active directory), provide QOS by port, etc.  Ideally it would be packaged with a nice easy web interface.

Any suggestions?

Pete

Hi Guys

Im in need of being able to connect 2 VLANS to a file server without breaching any of the security of the network.

Network has 4 VLANS:

Server, file server, print servers & multiple domain clients on 1 VLAN,

Production enviroment x 3 VLANS.

I need 2 of these production enviroment VLANS to be able to access the file server on VLAN 1 and need advice on best practice for this.

Guest WiFi Website Filtering

We have a guest WiFi network that I would like to lock down access to questionable websites based on categories rather than having to enter site manually.

Basically looking to block the usual Gambling, Porn, Drugs......

But looking for a free solution that will work through DNS settings on the guest WiFi network.

Any recommendations for a Wifi Router?

Good day Spiceworks, am looking for a wifi router for our office that is easily configurable, can be maintained, and let certain devices use.

We use a Watchguard / Firebox firewall so the router has to be compatible with this device.

I would like to avod dratek.

Your thoughts are welcome.

Kind regards

Network Simulator

Hi,

Does anyone know a good(free) network simulation software.

My IT Director wants to change out all of our layer 2 switches for layer 3.

We currently are only using layer 2 switches with vlans.  Other admin's including myself are trying to explain to him that the only place layer 3 switches would come in to play is to route between vlans and increase network performance by limiting broadcast's to all switches.  Also, are more expensive.  Could someone help us explaining this in another way (maybe with PowerPoint demo lol...) or example to him?

One internet connection shared with two LANs

I have been working for an IT help desk for almost two years  but usually only do desktop support and kind of suck at networking side of things. But I am starting school next year so that will soon change. Anyway. My problem is I need to share one Comcast internet connections and create two completely separate LANs. I have bought a switch that does VLAN's but I cant seem to get my setup to work properly. Here is a picture to show exactly how I have things setup right now. If I am doing something wrong or have a better way of doing it correctly please let me know.

Cheap Conduit Ideas

See, we're looking to run a 50-75 ft run in a drop ceiling that is rather... difficult. Imagine a home having the ceiling taken out, and all the frames are under 3 ft from each other, and the ceiling is about 12 ft off the ground. I'm thinking of running a conduit to make the pulls easier for at least half the job for when we need to expand down the road. However, the ceiling area as jungle-gym-esque as it is, PVC is not practical. My assistant thought of purchasing a few 3 inch 25 ft dryer vents and taping them together, as that's cheap, flexible, and easily maneuverable.

Now, I'm open for input and ideas, critiques, and any suggestions you all may have.

UPDATE FOR MORE DETAILS

I'm looking to run 8-20 XLR, min. 2 1/4 speaker cable, and 1+ HDMI. 75 - 100 ft on a tight budget. Looking to build a sound booth and run to the main section...

What's the best hardware for a pfSense box?

I don't have any old PCs lying around at the moment, and I'm looking to buy a prebuilt box to install pfSense on. It needs to be able to pass about 200Mbps of traffic between WAN and LAN. The pfSense website suggests that at least 2 ghz of processing power is required to pass this much traffic.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I would like to hear opinions and/or experiences on using personal VPNs and/or proxies.  Do they really work?  Does it slow your connection in any way, etc.  Here's a link I was given:

VOIP or fiber

We are moving into a new building and our original plan was to use fiber for both internet/phone.

The topic came up earlier this week for using VoIP.  The only experience I have with VoIP is skype, but I know that's nothing compared to a business integration.  What are your thoughts on VoIP, and is it something we should consider looking into?

Site-to-Site DNS issues - Sonicwall

Hello,

I've recently set up a VPN between two of our sites on a Sonicwall 2400 & 2600. The VPN is up and running, allowing traffic to flow freely. NetBios traffic is on for both ends, as well as the IPhelper rule for DNS. DNS on the remote site was configured to resolve against my main site's DNS server, but we had some issues with resolving sites like outlook.office365.com. Local DNS was not working, so I set the ATT DNS as the primary and use my local DNS as the secondary. External DNS is good, local still a no go. The computers at the remote site show they are connected to "network 4" even though the DHCP server (Sonicwall 2400) is set to have them on our domain. These are domain computers. After working with Sonicwall support we found out that the DNS request is making its way all the way to the DNS server at my main site, but no...

Hey Guys,

Noob question, we have ubiquiti edgerouters at all of our campuses, at each campus we have 4 vlans 1 management 5 staff 25 device(students) 30 guest.

When we vpn to our campuses we get an ip that is on the staff subnet but I'm unable to access ips on the management net. Is there a routing rule I need to set to access the other networks or change some rules in order to be able to manage the devices on the other subnets.

Staff net 15.0.4.0/24

Management 10.0.10.0/23

VPN help over mobile network

Hey Spiceheads,

I recently switched from Sprint to Cricket and upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S5. I couldn't be happier with the device and network (AT&T). I get signal everywhere which is awesome. Sprint was spotty at best.

Ok so here's the deal. I use OpenVPN for Android to connect to my AirVPN service. It works great on Wifi, but not so great on Cellular signal. I am able to connect to VPN without any issue, but a few moments after I start pulling data I get disconnected. If I pull no data, VPN stays connected.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.blinkt.openvpn&hl=en

I have worked with both AirVPN and Cricket. Both support teams have been great and very responsive, but at this point they are just pointing fingers at each other. Cricket assures me that they do not block any TCP or UDP traffic. AirVPN thinkgs that cricket is...

Suggestions for server room & office improvements

$

As part of our lease renewal the owner was able to negotiate some money (I haven't been told how much yet) for infrastructure improvements to our office space. The one thing the owner knows he wants to do is split the storage room that is right next to the server room in half so he can turn one half into an office for me so I can be located right next to the server room rather than 50 feet down the hall as I currently am. He has asked me for other ideas. A few things I've been wanting for a while came immediately to mind:

  • dedicated A/C unit for the server room
  • a 2nd rack for the server room, as I've got 2 servers sitting on a table because they don't fit in the one we have
  • new wiring for a conference room that was turned into space for 4 CAD workstations

Any ideas for anything else? It has to be infrastructure related, and would stay...
